Please join CABC in welcoming Lauren Braswell, CNM to our Board of Commissioners!
Lauren holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia State University and a Master’s Degree in Midwifery from University of Cincinnati. She has 16-years experience in nursing in Georgia, Mississippi, Hawaii, and Ohio, including high risk perinatal care, labor and delivery, the operating room, and the Post- Anesthesia Care Unit. For the past 8-years, Lauren has practiced as a midwife in Dayton, Ohio in a collaborative practice with midwives and obstetricians. Lauren’s goal was to become a midwife for as long as she can remember. “My mom is an OB/Gyn nurse who works in private practice, ” Braswell said. “She has always been such a wonderful role model. I used to go to work with her, and those experiences made me want to go into healthcare, too.”
What expertise, experience, and philosophy do you bring to the CABC board?
“I have over 16 years of experience in healthcare and have spent my career focusing on maternal and infant health and caring for underserved, high-risk populations. I am deeply connected to the communities I serve, both personally and professionally. I have three children and have, unfortunately, experienced a traumatic birth and poor care. It is my philosophy that patients deserve to be viewed holistically and individually by their providers and the birth workers caring for them.“
Why do you think that CABC-accreditation is important to birth centers and alongside midwifery units?
“I believe that CABC-accreditation is important because it holds birth centers and alongside midwifery units to a high standard of care, which includes adherence to current and best practice for pregnant people and their infants. A CABC-accreditation is one tool for assuring patient safety and high quality care."
What piqued your interest in a position as a CABC Commissioner?
I was approached by Emily Hayes, the current CABC Vice Chair. “I believe that my position as a CABC Commissioner will allow me to be instrumental in defining the Indicators that determine eligibility for CABC - accreditation. This will enable me to influence policies and practices that directly impact the community, ensuring that the needs of the populations served are met. ”
